The Hawaii Luau
Hawaiian Activities

Hawaii luaus are a fun, entertaining and educational tradition the whole family will enjoy. Named for the delicious dish served at the earliest of these beach celebrations, the pacific luau is a feast of exotic hawaii luau recipes accompanied by Hawaiian Hula, Polynesian Dances, and the exciting Samoan Fire Knife Dance. Listen to soothing Hawaiian music while enjoying a tropical drink, like a mai tai, chi chi, or blue Hawaii - or kick back with a beer and "hang loose"!

Some of the ono (delicious) food served at a Hawaii Luau are: kalua pig, (pork cooked in an imu, or underground oven near the luau cove or beachfront) lau lau, (pork or chicken and island fish steamed with coconut milk in luau leaves, the oldest Hawaiian food served at a Hawaii luau.), lomilomi salmon (salmon blended with tomato, onion and spices), poi (ground taro root mixed with water, dip your salty meat into it to calm down the flavor), steamed white rice (a local staple), poke (marinated raw fish, seaweed, and spices - it's HOT!). Pineapple, tropical fruit, haupia (coconut pudding) and other desserts round out the menu, and each Hawaii luau has its own specialties, like chicken long rice or pipikaula (dried beef). You'll also find soft drinks, kona coffee, and, of course, fruit punch on the menu.

There are many luaus in Hawaii, on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii, and they are considered among the must do Hawaii attractions when visiting the Aloha State. One of the most popular things to do in Maui is the Old Lahaina Luau, the oldest Maui Luau, but the newer Lele, on front street in Lahaina, is a fresh new addition to the Hawaii Luau vacation scene.

The Marriott on Kauai is home to what many call Kauai's best hawaiian luau. This Kauai Luau features a show by one of the most respected troupes in the Hawaiian Islands, Tihati.

Hawaiian Activities - Hawaii Luaus

If you're coming to Honolulu for Christmas, the Hawaii Luau celebrates the "Mele Kalikimaka" (Merry Xmas in Hawaiian) theme. There is no Honolulu Luau, but if you're looking for an Oahu Luau, you're in luck! There's more than one Waikiki Luau if you're strapped for time, but for a real adventure, take a drive or hop on a Hawaii luau bus to a place on the island far away from the crowds of Waikiki. Germaine's Luau and Paradise Cove Luau are toward the West end of the island, and include food, activities, music, and show. Tropical drinks with alcohol are served, and both luaus are right on the beach. Watch the Hawaiian sunset, then enjoy a fabulous Polynesian show and all-you-can-eat feast. At Paradise Cove, kids and adults alike will enjoy Hawaiian crafts and games.

For an all-day adventure, The Polynesian Cultural Center offers the Hawaiian Ali'i Luau, Hawaii's most authentic luau. Spend the day exploring the villages of the PCC, enjoy the Hawaii luau and show, then sit back and marvel at their spectacular evening show "Horizons - Where the Sea Meets the Sky"!

No matter what Hawaii luau you choose, one thing is for sure - you'll carry happy Hawaiian memories of aloha back home with you.
