KAUAI, THE GARDEN ISLAND

It is thought the first settlers to Kauai came around 200 AD, about 500 years before the rest of the island s were settled. Kauai is the only island that resisted takeover attempts by King Kamehameha in his quest to unite all the islands. The island remained an independent kingdom until 1810 when, upon the death of King Kaumuali'i, it fell under the rule of King Kamehameha.

Kauai, the Garden Island, is the fourth largest and the oldest in the island chain. Famed for its unparalleled beauty, it is home to the wettest spot on earth (Mt.
